Introduction and Q & A w/ Charles Burnett
Vagabond Harry (Danny Glover) pays an unexpected visit to his old chum Gideon (Paul Butler), who accepts the aimless man into his home, despite the fact that the household is already overcrowded. Hard-drinking yet charismatic, Harry both entertains and enrages Gideon and his wife, Suzie (Mary Alice). However, after Gideon falls gravely ill, Harry decides to step in and take his friend's place in the household. Unfortunately, his intentions are far from pure, and the consequences are tragic. The film won three 1991 Independent Spirit Awards: Best Director and Best Screenplay for Burnett and Best Actor for Glover. Additionally, the National Society of Film Critics presented Burnett their 1990 award for Best Screenplay for To Sleep With Anger. It also received a Special Jury Recognition Award at the 1990 Sundance Film Festival and a Special Award from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association. Both Burnett and Glover were nominated for New York Film Critics Circle Awards.
About the Director: Charles Burnett is an African-American film director, writer, actor and cinematographer best known for the films Killer of Sheep and To Sleep with Anger. Burnett went on to work with Danny Glover again, on 2007's Namibia: The Struggle for Liberation, which tells the story of the country's first president, Sam Nujoma. Two years later, Burnett directed the TV movie Relative Stranger, starring Cicely Tyson and Eriq La Salle.
While he has yet to become a famous director along the lines of Spike Lee, Burnett has been a highly influential filmmaker, and his works have served as an inspiration to countless others. The Museum of Modern Art in New York held a retrospective of Burnett's work in 2011. That same year, the University Press of Mississippi published Charles Burnett: Interviews. In 2017 Charles was awarded an Honorary Oscar from the Academy of Motion Picture Sciences for his outstanding contribution to the history of film production.
