Plug In Institute of Contemporary Art
460 Portage Ave Unit 1, Winnipeg, Manitoba R3C 0E8
On Friday, September 22, from 10pm until midnight, Plug In Institute of Contemporary Art in collaboration with Synonym Art Consultation is delighted to host an after party on our rooftop patio in celebration of the opening of the Winnipeg Art Gallery’s INSURGENCE / RESURGENCE. The evening will include a DJ set by DJ Boogie The Beat, two hip hop performances by Studio 393; and Scott Benesiinaabandan’s silent video 'sounds like light' will be projected in a continuous loop over the course of the evening.
INSURGENCE/RESURGENCE is the largest presentation of contemporary Indigenous art at the Winnipeg Art Gallery to date, featuring 29 artists who “express political insurgency and cultural resurgence to radically shift the Canadian paradigm.”
Join us in extending the launch of this significant exhibition curated by Jaimie Isaac and Julie Nagam. Doors and cash bar will open at 10pm and will go until midnight. Come have a drink with us, mingle with the artists, and celebrate!
'sounds like light' is a new animated video work produced by Benesiinaabandan that attends to the intersectional space where the political and the personal meet. Using archival images layered with animation and video, 'sounds like light' extends the ideas and images of his earlier series 'little resistances' (2015).
Scott Benesiinaabandan is an Anishinaabe intermedia artist working with photography, video, audio and printmaking. He has completed international residencies at Parramatta Artist Studios, Parramatta Australia; Context Gallery, Derry, Northern Ireland; and the University Lethbridge/Royal Institute of Technology iAIR. His work has been included in significant exhibitions across Canada and internationally.
Video projection, DJ sets and Hip Hop performances are generously sponsored by Synonym Art Consultation.
