Traditional Trails: Indigenous Led Group Rides at The Forks

Join us for the Traditional Trails: Indigenous Led Cycling Group Rides! Starting at The Forks historic site we will explore the area through an indigenous lense while also learning how to ride trails. The rides highlight the oral history of the space, metis history, treaty and current indigenous-led activism. Adrian Alphonso, a professional indigenous mountain biker, is also geared up to give tips on safe trail riding technique. See you there!

***** NOTE: 10 PARTICIPANTS PER RIDE ONLY — First Come First Serve *****

Make sure to bring a trail ready bike! Eg. a mountain bike


Sunday July 16th: Indigenous Trail Ride 1 — Narratives on Treaty One

The group will visit the Upper Fort Garry site, and talk about Treaty One signed at Upper Fort Garry. They will then have the chance to explore more of the river trails.

Wednesday July 19th: Indigenous Trail Ride 2 — REDdress Ride with Jamie Black

The REDdress ride will focus on the actions indigenous women have taken to address and bring awareness to #MMIW. Highlighting the work of metis artist Jamie Black, titled REDdress, we will navigate the river in conversation about the land, matriarchy, colonization, and murdered and missing indigenous women as we place prayer ties and medicines along the cycling trails.

Sunday July 30th: Indigenous Trail Ride 3: The Metis Ride: Louis Riel and the Red River Rebellion

The group will then ride from The Forks over the Provencher bridge to St. Boniface where they will visit the burial site of Louis Riel and talk about the history of the Metis in the area. They will then have a chance to ride the trails at Whittier Park.

— Sunday August 6th: Indigenous Trail Ride 4 — Oral History of The Forks

The group will explore the ancient history to modern of The Forks site through oral history, from the traditional settlements to indigenous agriculture. They will also get a chance to explore the river trails surrounding the forks.

The group will ride to visit Audry Logan at her community garden in west broadway to learn about traditional medicines and permaculture.
